How Reel In Together handles your data
No account required
You can create or join a room as a guest with just a nickname — no email, password, or real name. Reel In Together uses Supabase anonymous authentication behind the scenes so your swipes and votes are tied to a device-generated ID, not any personal information.
An email is optional, and only for people who want it
If you choose to "secure your profile," we ask for an email address so you can keep the same nickname, avatar, watchlist, and Movie DNA across future visits. That email is used only to send you a sign-in link — never for marketing, never shared with anyone else, and you can delete it (and everything tied to it) at any time from Profile > Delete Account.
What a profile is — and isn’t
A profile is a nickname, a preset avatar (a small illustration you pick — not a photo), a color, and whatever movie preferences you choose to fill in. We never ask for your real name, a photo of you, your birthdate, gender, phone number, or precise location, and Reel In Together has no public profiles, follower lists, or direct messaging.
Rooms are temporary
A room and everything in it — preferences, swipes, matches, tournament results — is meant to live for one movie night. Rooms that go inactive are automatically eligible for cleanup (typically within 24 hours), and either participant can close a room outright. A guest’s nickname, avatar, and color live on that room and are cleaned up along with it — nothing persists beyond the session unless you’ve secured your profile.
Your swipes are always private
Nobody — not your room partner, not a saved partner — can ever see which movies you personally passed on. Room partners see only what’s needed for the shared session (nickname, avatar, and the matches you both landed on). A saved partner (an optional, mutually-approved connection between two secured profiles) can additionally see completed movie-night history and watchlist overlap, and an aggregated compatibility score — never your raw preferences, your private ratings, or your Movie DNA.
What we don’t do
No location tracking, no contact list access, no advertising trackers, no AI training on your data, and we never sell data. We don’t use your swipes for anything beyond running your own session and (if you have a profile) your own Movie DNA.
What we store
For everyone: room preferences, the movie list shown in your session, swipe and vote values, and your display name and anonymous auth ID for that room. For a secured profile, additionally: your email, nickname, avatar, color, saved movie preferences, watchlist, completed movie-night history, a running Movie DNA summary, and — if you choose to use them — saved-partner connections and preference presets. That’s the complete list.
Deleting your data
A guest’s data disappears with the room automatically. A secured profile can be deleted in full at any time from Profile > Delete Account, which removes your saved preferences, watchlist, movie history, and Movie DNA, and ends any saved-partner connections without touching the other person’s own history.
Third-party services
Movie data comes from The Movie Database (TMDB) through a secured backend function — your device never talks to TMDB directly, and TMDB never sees who you are. See the Credits page for required attribution.
